Sydney Royal Easter Show Wrap Up

The Sydney Royal Easter Show has wrapped up for another year and it was a cracker! Our new site right outside the show bag pavilion was a huge success and we loved making new friends and seeing a lot of familiar faces.

A massive 810,000 people passed through the gates at the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year and it felt like just about every single person stopped by our stall. We were run off our feet!

One very familiar face that popped by for a visit was Greg Tibbits. Greg was the person responsible for introducing Morish Nuts to Virgin Blue 10 years ago. We can’t believe it has been 10 years! Time really does fly when you’re having fun. Fly!! Get it?! :)

Greg is now combining his love of cricket with a very successful career as a shareholder and senior executive running 11 Cricket centre stores around Australia. A big thank you to Greg; it was fantastic seeing you again! All at Morish Nuts wish you every success.

While the Sydney Royal Easter Show has now packed up, show season is not over yet.

Next up for the East is the NSW Caravan & Camping Show which started Friday, 20th April and will run until Sunday, 29th April. Also this weekend is the Royal Bathurst Show which is on from the 27th to the 29th of April. Be sure to pop by and say hello to Archie and Marie and pick up some delicious Morish treats.

For our friends in the West, don’t worry! We will be out and about this weekend, so you won’t miss out. We will be at the Harvey Agricultural Show (Friday 27th to Saturday 28th April) and the Treasured Craft Mothers Day Fair (Saturday 28th to Sunday 29th April) and we will be making an appearance at Tasting Australia (Saturday 28th to Sunday 29th April) for our South Australian fans.

Taste of Sydney 2012

The annual Taste of Sydney Show from 8th - 11th March kicked off our Eastern Walkabout, and what a great way to begin our East-coast Morish adventure. The weekend pop-up restaurant festival that will give you 'an unforgettable gourmet experience' complete with eating, nibbling, drinking, tasting and shopping - a foodie's haven!

Well, as the best shows always go, this one was off to an interesting start - the first day of the show had to be cancelled last minute due to the crazy weather in Sydney. A massive downfall of rain, and it didn't look like it was going to stop! So much rain in fact, that a guy at Bondi wearing a wet suit sitting at the foot of some stairs looked like he was sitting under a waterfall!

The rest of the weekend was looking fairly unpromising at that point!

But then, miraculously, the following day the sun was out and you wouldn’t have known that there was even a light shower, let alone torrential winds and rain only just the day before. So we had 3 glorious days of show time fun, and there were plenty of characters and Morish lovers that we met through the weekend.

One keen customer departed our stand with a gift of Soft Nougat for a friend - we've been informed that it didn't quite make it to the recipient, and she'll now be shopping for replacement Nougat bars for her friend AND herself on our website! (Too right, we say!)

We also spotted Simon Leong, who loved our Macadamias! You can see his blog about the whole festival here - it takes a lot of effort and a keen stomach to get round to ALL the exhibitors in just 3 days!!

So in the end the show was a great success, and a great start to another Eastern Walkabout. The next stop will be the Newcastle Show this weekend!

It's SHOW TIME!

Wake up! Wake up! It's Autumn already!! And the best bit about heading into the cooler months? ALL OF THE SHOWS OF COURSE!!

Remember Archie's Eastern Walkabout last year? Well, we're travelling the East coast again and going to all those wonderful shows - filling up on that good ol' festival feel, catching up with old friends and nut lovers, and of course providing you with the huge joy of Morish show bags :-)

So get your calendars and diaries out and jot these down - if you're super duper excited like we are you may want to use highlighters and multicoloured pens too! Post its sometimes help, or flashing neon signs - but we hope you don't need to get that extravagant!

First up the Tastes of Sydney show from the 8th of March. The week after that (no messing about with free time here!) find us at the Newcastle Show (16th - 18th March). And then as we head into April, a bumper of a month we go!!

Those keenly awaiting the Sydney Royal Easter Show will get to go wild again; bring on the show rides, big crowds and lots and lots of show bags! We'll be there from 5th April until the 18th. And if you feel the need to see the show again and again, we'd be more than happy to assist your sugar levels with a bit of our special caramel coated Morish Premium Nut Mix.

We'll take a quick breath then shoot over to the NSW Caravan & Camping Show from the 20th. And while that's happening, we do a tricksy double whammy in the last weekend where you'll see us at the Royal Bathurst Show AS WELL between 27th - 29th April.

Yep, that's right - we can multi-task so well you might as well call us a woman!

And not to keep the other side of the country awaiting their Morish fix - you'll also see us at…Wagin's Woolorama (9th & 10th March), Araluen's Fremantle Chilli Festival (10th and 11th March) and the Perth Caravan & Camping Show from 15th - 19th March.

Australia Day

There are many highlights of being an Aussie, one being that we have one of those unique languages that only we can understand!

For instance, this Australia you might…

Say a hooroo to your mates and head down to Woolies to stock up on tucker and throw the bangers (and the shrimp - good ol' Paul Hogan) on the barbie and bog in with a coldie in your other hand.

Here's a starter's list on the Aussie slang - a necessity to any tourists who happen to be around when the blue and white colours and Southern Cross stick on tatts are pulled out come January 26th.

Yes, it's true!

An undeniably popular (top-of-the -list!) holiday destination, Mauritius really has it all: gorgeous beaches, picturesque scenery, historical and cultural sites - a luxury world on one island. The Mauritius tourism info hub even describes itself as "an oasis of peace and tranquillity, set in its turquoise sea"…

Whoar.

So we thought it was a highly suitable place to be enjoying gourmet snacks - while sunbaking!

…Ok, ok, we made a mistake -

Mauritius NEARLY had it all. They now have Morish to thank for sealing the deal! :)

A quiet, bohemian December in the ol' town Fremantle is given the heave ho to make way for the ISAF Sailin' World Championships held this month between 3rd and 18th of December.

Avast!

This hear ye be the biggest sailin' event held at our splendid Freo since the 1987 America's Cup Defence (blimey!). And the town is out in full force to accommodate the thousands of visitors expected for the Worlds - which will be 3 times as big as the Cup! - that will be here for the 2-week regatta.

Why such a turn out? Well if ye aren't a sailin' buff I'll tell ye!

The Sailin' World Champs are the holy gateways for competitors to earn their place at the Olympic Games. So if ye want a gold medal for ye loot of pirate booty ye best raise ye Jolly Rogers an' set sail!

Savvy??

And to join in the commotion, Morish will be setting anchor with our scrumptious Morish van full o' ye favourite nuts 'n snacks. Find us parked on shore with ye other landlubbers. We recommend all ye lads an' lassies set up with a Pop-A-Jak whilst watching a race - then try not to blink, those sailin' maties pull up mighty fast!

We're barracking for the Aussies to leave all the other competitors to feed the fish then set three sheets to the wind in celebration ;)

Frantic are the days in the lead up to Christmas - how could it be December, ALREADY?!

Well, we at Morish like to [try] take it easy during the festive season, so we'll pass on some gift-giving advice to make it a cinch for you too.

It's that point at which you are wondering around the shopping centre for the 11th hour straight, slightly loopy because of the ice-cream stops you HAD to make along the way, yet still without any success of "gifts" that it really sinks in: Christmas shopping is hard. We suggest planning your gifts before hitting the shops expecting them to jump out at you from windows, encased in the perfect gift wrap and hand written card. Zip, bam, boom - you have a list and it takes less than an hour to wiz around, ticking off Dad, Sis, second cousins and Grandma's next door neighbour.

When we make friends, we like to keep them.

Especially when they're cute and furry.

Here at Morish we've been supporting the Guide Dogs for 12 years (that's 84 in dog years!!). Starting in our humble home in WA, where in fact the first Guide Dogs of Australia began when a young chap called Arnold Cook decided to start the organisation, we've helped them raise money in one of their best fundraisers of the year!

It costs $30,000 to train each one of those Guide Dog pups (they're not ALL puppy eyes and wagging tails!), so the Association relies completely on the generosity of those who donate to their Guide Dog Program. And, each Guide Dog is actually given to those in need free of charge, so supporting them through fundraising is vital.

And that's where Morish step in!

Each year before the Royal Show you can buy a super-duper-special Guide Dogs/Morish Nuts Hamper or Tote Bag. What's the benefit? Well, you get a hamper full of scrummy goods to eat (both for you AND little Fido) plus you could win free tickets to the show. AND BEST OF ALL, you're helping raise funds to train those little pooches.

Soon after WA caught on to the Hampers, we quickly rolled out to Queensland and New South Wales.

National Nut Day!

National Nut Day is celebrated on October 22nd in the USA and UK, but given that we're nutty about those little things EVERY day, we've decided to pay particular attention to the grandness of nuts in order to join in the festivities.

Apart from the huge health benefits and yummy snack options - nuts have a pretty cool appearance through history.

Peanut butter was developed in 1890 by a doctor in St. Louis who ground peanuts to give to elderly patients as an easily digestible food. In actual fact, peanut butter has a few more uses than the regular sarny - the natural oils found in peanut butter can remove gum from your hair. So mum's and dad's, it's ok to let your kids go nuts (haha) with a stick of Hubba Bubba, so long as you've stocked up on the PB.

In Celtic lore the Hazel tree is the tree of knowledge. Apparently (this is a rough translation of ancient myth) there was a sacred pool in Ireland that was surrounded by 9 Hazel trees. Hazelnuts would drop from these trees into the water, and be eaten by salmon - and legend has it that if you ate the salmon you would be granted with immense knowledge. Nice!

A native Australian tree, the Bunya Pine, produces large cones of Bunya nuts once every 3 years. When this happened, Aboriginals would hold a Bunya Feast in the mountains of Queensland (the only place these trees grow) to celebrate (and eat and eat and eat!). We like to do that with our Morish Family Mix after every batch… but that's just us!

Pistachios managed to always make it into the knapsacks of travellers and explorers in those early days - this is because of their high nutritional value and long storage life. So if you don't have pistachios in your trail mix these days, you really need some upgrading to the original snack-a-thon food.

That goes for you too, Dora.

Almonds are a world favourite. Tutankhamen had them in his tomb, the ancient Romans loved them, Shakespeare wrote about them, and reference to the humble almond are even found in the Bible. We'll say no more.

And a few other pieces of trivia, just for fun…

..Walnuts shells are a specialist medium used for polishing.

.. Some American states have officially appointed nuts as their State Nut - Missouri has the Eastern Black Walnut, Alabama and Texas both adore the Pecan, and Oregon names the Hazelnut as the State representative.

..Pecans come in a variety of sizes, correct terminology is "mammoth, extra large, large, medium, small and midget".

..Macadamias have the hardest shell to crack into, but the Hyacinth Macaw, Hyena and Alligator all have a jaw strong enough to crack it open on their own. Lesson learnt: don't mess with any of these animals. A human's skin is not as thick as a macca's shell.

Of course, if you're not already a nut lover and haven't been convinced by our loving interpretation of nut history, the wonders of peanut butter sandwiches and the pecan pie are enough to satisfy us!

CROWDS OF PEOPLE BUSTLE THROUGH THE STREETS OF MELBOURNE CITY. MONTHS OF ANTICIPATION HAD BOILED DOWN TO JUST DAYS AWAY TO THE ANNUAL ROYAL SHOW. THE CITY WAS BUZZING.

…MEANWHILE

A MYSTERIOUS GUEST ARRIVES AT THE SHOWGROUNDS… IT'S MORISH NUTS, MAKING THEIR RETURN TO THE MELBOURNE SHOWGROUNDS AFTER 12 YEARS!

Excitement has been brewing at the Morish kitchen as we FINALLY get to spill the beans and reveal our comeback to the Royal Melbourne Show!

We last came to the show over a decade ago in 1999 and have truly missed the thrills and fun at the Melbourne Showgrounds. It's been a loooooong 12 years…

…So we've decided to come back!

Celebrating its 156th year, the Royal Melbourne Show is packed full of the best show adventures you could ask for.
